Apistogramma borellii Paraguay wild

Recently we received beautiful wild collected specimens of A. borellii from Paraguay.
This species is an ideal aquarium fish. In contrast to many other species of the
genus A. borellii is completely undemanding regarding water chemistry. Even in medium
hard, slightly alcalic water the species thrives well and even breeds. The behaviour
of A. borelli is similar to most other Apistogrammas: it is a polygamous species
(that means each male breeds with several females), a cavebrooder, and the female has
to do the most work in respect of taking care for the fry. However, A. borellii is
among all the different types of Apistogramma the one that fits best to human ideals:
it is even possible to keep it in pairs and every now and then even males take care
for the brood. It is recommended to keep the fish in unheated aquaria during some
weeks of the year. This will lead to a longer life in A. borellii and healthier fish.

Lexicon: Apistogramma: ancient Greek, means "with unreliable line". It is not known
wether the lateral line organ or the pattern is meant. borellii: dedication name.

Potamotrygon sp. Mozaico: a new freshwater stingray from Peru!

We have received two beautiful stingrays from Peru which were collected in the Rio
Ucuyali. Both specimens have a disc width of about 15-20 cm and are males. According
to the grade of development of their sexual organs the species grows to a much bigger
size. The fish do not fit any scientific description published so far and thus
represent either a species of Potamotrygon new to science or a natural hybrid.

Lexicon: Potamotrygon: ancient Greek, means "a Trygon that lives in rivers"; Trygon
is another genus of ray.

Ancistomus sp. L387 - beautiful bred ones available!

The loricariid catfish L387 is imported only occasionally and in small numbers from
Colombia and Venezuela. This is due to the fact that obviously another, easily
available and (at least in juvenile stages and fright coloration) very similar
species occurs where L387 lives: L147. So we get wild collected L387 only as
so-called by-catches.

Initially L387 was placed in Peckoltia, but more current observations show that it is
rather a member of Ancistomus. So far it was not possible to apply any scientifically
described specific name on L387.

However, L387 is one of the most colorful loricariids known so far and thus breeders
have taken them under their care. So we can now offer this species in relative good
numbers. Maximum length reported for L387 is around 15 cm. Keeping is easy, but one
should keep in mind that these fishes prefer slightly higher temperatures of about
25-29°C.

Lexicon: Ancistomus: compound of the generic names Ancistrus and Hypostomus; both are
similar genera of loricariid catfish. Peckoltia: Named after Gustavo Peckolt, member
of the Natural History Commission of Rondon.
