Boraras micros

Boraras micros, male

The tiniest species of Boraras is B. micros. This real dwarf attains only a
length of 1.5 cm (aquarium kept specimen, however, can grow a little bit
larger than wild ones, which is a common phenomenon in ornamental fish
species). B. micros is very similar to B. maculatus, but can be
distinguished from it by the stouter body and the smaller shoulder spot.
The latter is smaller than the eye in B. micros. as large as or larger than
the eye in B. maculatus.

Boraras micros, female

Like in all species of Boraras several varieties are known. The systematical
status of these is not researched yet. Initially B. micros has been
described from northern Thailand. The specimens collected there are usually
of a whitish or pinkish ground coloration. In B. micros collected in
southern Thailand the ground coloration usually is a deep red. Thus we call
it B. cf. micros „red“, as it possibly represents a new species.

Loricaria lentiginosa

202009/loricaria%20lentiginosa2.jpg>

For the first time ever we were able to import one of the largest species of
Loricarai, namely L. lentiginosa. The magnificent animals are about 40 cm
long and thus fully grown. Like in all species of Loricaria they are
paternal mouthbrooders. The male transports the eggs that stick together
with its mouth until they hatch.

In nature Loricaria lentiginosa occurs in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo.
In the natural habitats of this species the water is pretty cool in the
winter (our summer), eg 16°C. Temperature rises in the summer (our winter)
up to 22°C. It is very important to consider this when keeping the species
in the aquarium.

Lexicon: Loricaria: from the Latin word „lorica“which is the chest protector
of the Roman legionnaire, eg „one that wears a chest protector“.
lentiginosa: from the Latin word for „freckled“.

Lampiella gibbosa

202009/lampiella1.jpg>

This charming little catfish species was described as early as 1908 by
Miranda Ribeiro under the name Otocinclus gibbosus. But only when a group of
reseaching aquarists (H.-G. Evers, M. Lacerda, and M. Beyer) managed to
cellect the fish alive it became clear, how distinct from all other
Otocinlus-like fishes this species really is. There do exist lots of
individual colour variations, some are pretty orange-black, other ones
rather grey. Most of them are yellowish.

202009/lampiella2.jpg>

The species occurs in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo in the Rio Betari.
Well known other species found here are for example Scleromystax barbatus
(formerly known as Corydoras b.) or Parotocinclus paulinus. Like all species
from these regions Lampiella have to be kept rather cool (16-22°C). They
mainly feed on aufwuchs, but they also take readily freshly hatched brine
shrimp nauplii. The maximum size for these charming fishes is 5 cm.

For our customers: the species has code 264884 on our stocklist. Please note
that we exclusively supply the wholesale market.

Lexicon: Lampiella: to remind of the grandmother of the describer of the
genus, Isaac Isbrücker, Céline Lampie. She was murdered in 1943 in Poland in
the Sobibor concentration camp by the nazis. She was „a small woman with a
small hump“. Gibbosa: latin word for „humpy“.

New Emperor tetra imported!

202009/nematobrycon%20nov%20mann1.jpg>

We were able to import for the first time a new species of emperor tetra
from Brazil. The fish were offered as „Inpaichthys sp. Black“. The genus
Inpaichthys currently has only one species, eg I. kerri from the Mato Grosso
in Brazil. The closely related genus Neamtobrycon (two species, N. lacortei
and N. palmeri, both from Colombia) differs from Inpaichthys only by the
structure of the caudal fin (with filamentous extensions in Nemtobrycon,
which are lacking in Inpaichthys) and the adipose fin, which is present in
Inpaichthys and lacking in Nematobrycon. Our new species represents an
in-between forn, with raunded caudal lobes as in Inpaichthys, but lacks the
adipose fin as in Nematobrycon. Sadly we obtained only very few specimens
which are given to reliable breeders. The fish are currently about 5 cm
long.

Lexicon: Inpaichthys: fish of INPA, the Brazilian research insitute
„Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazonia“. kerri: in honour for the
INPA-director W.E. Kerr. Nematobrycon: means „Brycon with thread“. Brycon is
another genus of tetras, thread refers to the filamentous caudal fin.
lacortei: in honour for the American ichthyologist R. la Corte. palmeri: in
honour for the first collector of the species, M. G. Palmer.
