We recently received this beautiful dwarf cichlid from Guinea. The species is
a close relative of P. humilis and was known in the hobby as P. sp.
"Bandi 1" before its scientific description.</span></font></b><o:p></o:p></p>

Maximum size in males is around <st1:metricconverter ProductID="10 cm" w:st="on">10
cm</st1:metricconverter>, females stay always smaller. As in almost all
Pelvicachromis there is an extreme sexual dichromatism. Persons that are not
educated in the hobby can easily think that males and females belong to
different species. The spot on the belly of the females looks incredibly;
there is already a saying in our fishhouse that goes like this: "who has
put the lamp inside the belly of this fish?"</span></font></b><o:p></o:p></p>

These fish originate from forest creeks and should be kept at comparatively
low temperatures, around 22 to <st1:metricconverter ProductID="24°C" w:st="on">24°C</st1:metricconverter>,
and soft and slightly (!) acidic water. It is important to offer the fish
sand as gravel, for they love to dig.</span></font></b><o:p></o:p></p>

From Peru we received once more juveniles of the fantastic predatory catfish
B. juruense. Adults of this species attain a maximum length of around <st1:metricconverter
ProductID="60 cm" w:st="on">60 cm</st1:metricconverter> and have a very nice,
zebra-like striped pattern. The coloration of the body of the juveniles is
very variable. There do exist spotted ones, striped ones or even uniformly
dark ones. All have in common the large, white caudal fin. On the upper lobe
of the caudal fin is a filament that is as long as the body of the fish.
Juveniles - the photographed specimens are 5-<st1:metricconverter
ProductID="8 cm" w:st="on">8 cm</st1:metricconverter> long - are already
predators. Sometimes they swim free in the water column, the head turned
upside, against the current. Now the caudal filament works as a stabilizer,
comparable to the tail of a kite. Another, species-specific behaviour of the
fish is to sit on the bottom, braced on the ventral fins and looking against
the water surface. It seems likely that in this position the long tail
filament works as a fishing rod that attracts small fish.</span></font></b><o:p></o:p></p>
