For the first time ever we received now this interesting doplhin catfish from
Peru. In contrast to many of its congeneers this species stays relatively
small and reaches only <st1:metricconverter ProductID="12 cm" w:st="on">12 cm</st1:metricconverter>
in total length. Thus it is suitable also for normal sized home aquaria.
However, one should always keep in mind that these catfishes are predatory
fish and that tankmates must not be too small. Otherwise the dolphin cat is a
peaceful species.</span></font></b><o:p></o:p></p>

During breeding season the males develope very long dorsal spines that are
used while mating to fix the female. There is an internal insemination, but
most details regarding the natural history of these interesting fishes are
still unknown.<br>

Lexicon: Ageneiosus: from ancient Greek, means "without a beard";
this refers to the fact hat the barbels are usually hidden and cannot be
observed externally. atronasus: Latin, means "with a black nose".<br>

Another recent first importation from Peru: a new species of Erythrinus! It
is clearly distinguished from the other two species of Erythrinus known so
far from Peru, eg Erythrinus erythrinus (see <a
href="http://www.aquariumglaser.de/en/erythrinus-erythrinus-_de_1009.html">http://www.aquariumglaser.de/en/erythrinus-erythrinus-_de_1009.html</a>)
and E. sp. Madre de Dios (see <a
href="http://www.aquariumglaser.de/en/erythrinus-sp-madre-de-dios_de_1324.html">http://www.aquariumglaser.de/en/erythrinus-sp-madre-de-dios_de_1324.html</a>)
by the fine, whiteish-blue seam on the caudal fin. Our specimens are still
too small (6-<st1:metricconverter ProductID="8 cm" w:st="on">8 cm</st1:metricconverter>)
to say anything on the adult coloration.</span></font></b><o:p></o:p></p>

Keeping Erythrinus is quite easy. The fish easily accept deep frozen fish
(smelt) as main food item. As the fish have an accessory breathing organ, the
water quality is of lesser meaning. Temperature should not raise over <st1:metricconverter
ProductID="25°C" w:st="on">25°C</st1:metricconverter> over a longer period,
for at least the Peruvian Erythrinus are somewhat sensitive in this respect.<br>
<br>
