Available again: Sphaerichthys selatanensis

After a long time we were able again to stock the beautiful Sphaerichthys
selatanensis from Borneo.

With an overall length of 5 cm Sphaerichthys selatanensis is probably the smallest
representative of the chocolate gouramis. It may recognized by its typical cross
design. The species originates from Kalimantan in the southeast part of the island of
Borneo. Like its relatives it lives in acidic black water brooks (at the discovery
site measured water equivalents: pH: 4.5. LF: 17 µs/cm, temp.: 26°C).

Chocolate gouramis need much attention during acclimatization and maintenance.
Natural water conditions should serve thereby as model, peat filtering or the use of
tropical-almond leafs (catappa) are recommended. Regarding community fish, small
Rasbora species are suitable, they share the biotopes with S. selatanensis also in
the wild. Breeding of chocolate gouramis is very difficult, in particular the raising
of the larvae often fails due to infections.

For our customers: the fish has code 455822 on our stocklist. Please note that we
exclusively supply the wholesale trade.

Lexicon: Sphaerichthys: from ancient Greek, menas "spheric fish"; selatanensis: after
the Province of Kalimantan Selatan on Borneo, where the fish initially has been
discovered.

Suggestion of a common name: Crossband Chocolate Gourami

Otocinclus cocama

The dwarfish catfishes of the genus Otocinclus are usually kept due to their
algae-eating activities and their nice behaviour. The coloration of most of the
species is only rather dull. Otocinclus are very famous for cleaning especially the
waterplants without hurting them.

Could it be that there exists a species that is not only very useful, but also
beautiful? Yes, there is! Otocinclus cocama, the zebra otocinclus, has both: all the
positive aspects of its congeneers and a very attractive pattern. Regarding care, the
up to 4 cm long fish is as undemanding as all other Otocinclus. Another unique aspect
in O. cocama is the fact that all specimens have an individual pattern.

Males become larger than the females and when spotted from top the females are much
more heavily built. Otocinclus spawn in the same way as Corydoras do, eg they scatter
the eggs on the environment or the glasses of the tank, most often at the place where
the filtered water flows back in the tank. Otocinclus do not take care for their
brood.

Lexicon: Otocinclus: ancient Greek, means "with latticed ear"; referring to a bone in
the skull, which is visible externally and placed where in humans would be the ear;
this bone has a latticed structure. cocama: "named after the Cocama-Cocamilla Indians
that used to be dominant in the lower Ucayali and Marañon rivers....During the last
century, the Cocama culture has been mostly assimilated by the regional society,
losing their language and identity, being thus threatened as a group." (Reis, 2004).

Common name: Zebra otocinclus

Last year we were already able to import this impressive species from Colombia, see
http://www.aquariumglaser.de/en/astronotus-ocellatus-wild,-kolumbien_de_1176.html

Now we could once more organize an importation of this fantastic cichlid from
Colombia, but this time the fish are even more beautiful and have a lot of shining
spots all over the belly. These are really awesome and majestic fishes!
