New Corys from the Madre de Dios!

We received eight new Corydoras species from the Madre de Dios region in Peru. This
region is located in the extreme Southeast of Peru and is of special interest
regarding zoogeography of fishes, because the main river of the region, the Rio Madre
de Dios, does not flow in a northern direction to the Amazon river like all other
rivers in Peru that originate in the Andes, but to the east. The Rio Madre de Dios
passes through Bolivia, where it flows in the Rio Beni. The Rio Beni fuses with the
Rio Marmoré and both form the Rio Madeira. The latter flows in Brazil in the Amazon
river.

Three of the new Corydoras form a typical species trio: the roundnosed species
(listet under the name of "manu 5 short nose") looks a bit like a Corydoras julii,
but has a very nice striped caudal fin. It is already known in the hobby as "C120".
The longnosed type (listet under the name of "manu 2 semi long nose") looks very much
alike; this species is new in the hobby. And then there is the saddlenosed type
(listed as "manu 1 long nose"), which has the C-number C116.

It is not known whether the three additional types of saddle nosed Corydoras (sent
under the names "manu 4, 7, 8") really represent different species or mere varieties
of the same species as C116. However, reminding the well know variability of the
saddle nosed Corydoras the latter hypothesis seems the more likely one.

Another saddle nosed cory was sent as "manu 6 batman". This is for sure a different
and new species. It has transparent fins and the males (which can be easily
recognized by the thick pectoral fin spine) are of the same size as the females. In
"manu 1, 4, 7, 8" the males become much bigger than the females.

Finally, the shipment contained another new roundnose which looks a bit like
Corydoras xinguensis and was listed as "morse Madre de Dios".

The list name "Manu" refers to one of the three provinces in the Madre de Dios
region. We do not know what "morse" stands for.

These new Corydoras are extremely rare. Hopefully the cory enthusiasts will give them
a warm welcome.
