Caros colegas,

Mais uma " newsletter " com duas interessantes propostas.

É certo que nenhuma destas raridades é um vivíparo... mas uma das propostas é de
facto um interessante Cyprinodontiforme :-)

Um abraço

Megalamphodus "sweglesi-rubra"

Honestly speaking, the trade name for this cute fish is completely wrong: first of
all, the genus name Megalamphodus is regarded nowadays as a synonym to Hyphessobrycon
and twice the species in question is an undescribed one and not identical with the
red phantom tetra, H. sweglesi. However, even undescribed fish have to be named
somehow in the trade....

This is the most beautiful species of phantom tetra. It originates from Colombia and
is available only for a relatively short time per year. Now the season has come and
the opportunity to stock the fish.

As the species is available as wildcaught only the fish are much smaller than the
phantom tetras that are bred in captivity. At a total length of 2-3 cm the fish are
adult already and delight their owner with their striking colours and the harmless
fights among the males.

For our customers: the fish have code 267402 on our stocklist. Please note that we
exclusively supply the wholesale trade.

Fluviphylax obscurus

Lampeyes are mainly known from Africa, where a large number of species occurs. In
Asia, the ricefish of the genus Oryzias have occupied the ecological niche of the
lampeyes, but they are no close relatives of the latter, which belong to the
killifishes. But it is little known that in South America also lampeyes occur. The
genus Fluviphylax has 5 described members in Amazonia. None of them becomes larger
than 3 cm. These tiny fish belong to the killifish family.

>From an aquarists point of view, Fluviphylax are absolute rarities. They are hardly
ever exported and breeding them is a time-consuming matter, as the fry grows very
slowly.

So we are quite proud that we were able to import once more one of these treasures.
This time it is Fluviphylax obscurus, a species that can be recognized by its
relatively large eyes. Along the belly the fish has a shining stripe. Males and
females can be distinguished by the shape of the anal fin, which is much larger in
males.

Despite the small size these fish are relatively hardy in the aquarium. They should
be kept in a school as large as possible. The light should be not too intensive and
the surface should be a covered with swimming plants. Fluviphylax feed on any usual
fishfood as long as it is small enough.

For our customers: the fish have code 325681 on our stocklist. Please note that we
exclusively supply the wholesale trade.

Lexicon: Fluviphylax: from Latin "river" and ancient Greek "guardian", so the name
means "guardian of the river". obscurus: Latin, means "dark, hidden".
