Nannacara adoketa

202009/683485-adoketa%20mann.jpg>

This cichlid originates from a quite small area in the middle course of the
Rio Negro in Brazil. It was discovered as late as 1993 and for a long time
most aquarium enthusiasts only could dream off it. The very few imported
specimens were mostly sold to Japan. They were very expensive, but
nevertheless found their market.

Nannacara adoketa is different from other Nannacara in serveral aspects. For
example, its natural range is far from the range of all other members of the
genus. This led to the erection of a sepearate genus for this species (and
the species N. bimaculata), namely Ivanacara. Currently there is no broad
acceptance of this.

The males of this beautiful species can reach a length of 8-9 cm, whereas
the females stay about 3 cm smaller. The fish need soft and acidic water to
thrive well. Temperature should be between 23 and 26°C, the animals
generally prefer cooler water than warmer water! Even breeding appears at
temperatures as low as 24°C. N. adoketa are open brooders with a parent
family.

For our customers: the fish have code 683485 on our stocklist. Please note
that we exclusively supply the wholesale market.

Lexicon: Nannacara: means "small Acara". Acara is an Tupi word for cichlid.
adoketa: from ancient Greek, means "unexpected". This refers to the natural
range of the species which lies far from the distribution of the other
members of the genus. Ivanacara: after "acara" and Ivan the Terrible, the
first Tsar of Russia. The authors refer to the unpredictable temper of the
fish which they have observed. According to them the species can be
extremely aggressive and extremely peaceful. bimaculata: Latin for "with two
spots".

Garra flavatra

202009/416461-garra%20flavatra%20rotflossig1.jpg>

The algae-eating suckermouth barb Garra flavatra from Burma is a quite
beautiful fish. In contrast to all other species of algae-eaters this is a
species which is kept due to its own attractivity.

In our show-room the fish now revealed a secret they kept so far: they
develope deep red fins!

202009/416461-garra%20flavatra%20rotflossig3.jpg>

Keeping Garra flavatra is very easy. They like water temperatures between 18
and 26°C (better cooler than warmer). The remaining water parameters are of
no meaning for them. The up to 9 cm long fish are kept best in groups. They
are completely peaceful against each other as well as against other species.

For our customers: we currently have bred ones (416460) and wild collected
ones (416461) in stock. Please note that we exclusively supply the wholesale
market.

Lexicon: Garra: an indigenous name for those fishes in Bengal. flavatra:
Latin, means "yellow-black", referring to the coloration.

Macrognathus meklongensis

202009/425164-macrognathus%20meklongensis1.jpg>

We were able to import for the first time one of the smallest and most
beautiful species of spiny eel: Macrognathus meklongensis from Thailand. This
charming species becomes hardly 15 cm long and only as thick as a
forefinger.

The coloration differs very much depending on mood. The basic colour is a
nice golden bonze, the fins become yellow-red when the fish feels good,
below the dorsal fin (which has black stripes) are small ocelli (eye-spots).

202009/425164-macrognathus%20meklongensis2.jpg>

The species is very peaceful against tankmates, may the belong to the own
species or other ones. Very small fish will be eaten, but the spiny eel is
not a predator at all. It mainly feeds on small invertebrates, especially
moscito larvae and bloodworm, which are also readily taken when frozen. If
you have the opportunity to feed live waterflees, you should not miss it! It
is really funny to observe how the spiny eels, bringing their body in a
S-shape figure (this looks a bit like a seahorse), pick the flees out of the
water column.

202009/425164-macrognathus%20meklongensis3.jpg>

Regarding water parameters the spiny eels are totally undemanding. Water
temperature should be between 22 and 28°C. It is necessary to furnish the
aquarium with many caves and other hiding places during the phase of
settling in, but after that phase the spiny eels will be visible very often.
It is of great importance to cover the tank completely, for spiny eels are
real masters of escape.

For our customers: the animals have code 425164 on our stocklist. Please
note that we exclusively supply to the wholesale market.

Lexicon: Macrognathus: from ancient Greek, means "with large jaws".
meklongensis: originating from the Meklong river.
